Some Hints on how to plan for incoming attacks
Livius posted a great item on the REVO forum re: getting attacked.
A few hints when you get incoming attacks...
What is the speed of the attacker ? If you were online when the "incoming attack warning" appeared, you know it's travel speed. If it is fast, it has no catas. In that case I would dodge unless you are sure you will have little losses. Just make sure you empty your warehouse.
Is it one attack or multiple waves ? Slow moving multiple waves indicate a catapult attack. If the target is an important village, reinforce it. Remember: the more defensive forces you have in your village, the less losses you will suffer.
If you know he will outnumber you, time your reinforcements so they will arrive one second after the first wave. If your timing is okay, his first wave might destroy your city wall, but the following waves (the catapults) will be killed by your defenders that arrived after his first wave.
Check the attackers village on the map... Is it a support village ? Is it a cropper ? Is it his capital ? Has it got one or more crop oases ? That allows you to guess the maximum size of the army. Mind you, if he builds troops in this village and keeps them parked in another village, your estimate will not be correct. But usually this is not the case.
EXAMPLE:
Let’s say you have an attack coming from the village Ancient Den. It is a standard village (6 crop fields) and there is no crop oasis connected to this village. It is his capital, so crop fields can be upgraded above level 10. But higher upgrades become expensive and he only has 3 other villages, none of them fully extended. So my guess is that his crop fields are between level 12 and 14 maximum. His 3 other villages are not close enough nor big enough to feed extra troops he might have built in his capital.
This information makes me think he produces between 3600 and 5400 crop per hour. deduct 944 for the population of his village and a handfull of scouts. Even if he has no defensive forces in his capital, the maximum size of that army would be a few thousand infantry, a few hundred horses and around 100 rams/catas.

This is a helpful guide. Thanks.

- I don't follow this comment:Mind you, if he builds troops in this village and keeps them parked in another village, your estimate will not be correct.
- If you were not online when the attack appeared (or you didn't notice it immediately), all is not lost. You can still make some estimates based on how long ago it was you last looked and how much time is left in the attack. It's much harder to be sure, though.

If the incoming attack is coming from village A which is normal village , you would estimate he does not have big troops. But he can have great amount of troops being built in village A and stashing them in village B which is a cropper.

Ah yes, I see. Using a cropper to expand the capacity of another village.
